In 1788, the island was christened Garden Island after it was cultivated as a kitchen-garden by the officers and crew of the First Fleet vessel HMS Sirius. The island is home to what is believed to be the oldest colonial graffiti in Australia, etched into a sandstone rock.

Today, Garden Island is a pivotal part of the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Fleet Base East. It houses active dockyards, naval wharves, and a naval heritage and museum precinct. Approximately half of the RAN’s major fleet units call these wharves their home port.
