A Little Bay with a Rich History
Nestled in the South-Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, lies a coastal suburb known as Little Bay. This charming suburb is located 14 kilometers south-east of the Sydney central business district. The suburb has a simple reason for its name as it takes its name from the geographical formation of the bay in the suburb called Little Bay, which also features a small beach and a bay.

A Glimpse into the Past
The history of Little Bay is as fascinating as its picturesque landscapes. The area was first used as a sanitation camp during Sydney’s smallpox outbreak in 1881–82. To isolate the patients and prevent the spread of the disease, the government decided to use this remote location as a hospital site. This marked the beginning of Little Bay’s long association with healthcare and medical research.

The Prince Henry Hospital
In 1888, Coast Hospital was established at Little Bay. The hospital was later renamed Prince Henry Hospital, in honor of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in 1934. The hospital played a significant role in the community and was renowned for its teaching and research until its closure in 2003.

Modern Little Bay
Today, Little Bay is a thriving residential area known for its idyllic setting and community spirit. The old hospital buildings have been transformed into modern apartments and facilities, blending the old with the new. The suburb is home to several heritage-listed sites, including the former Prince Henry Hospital Tramway and the Coast Cemetery.

Little Bay’s Natural Beauty
Little Bay is not just about its rich history; it’s also a place of natural beauty. The suburb is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and several golf courses, offering stunning views and outdoor activities for residents and visitors. The small beach at Little Bay is a hidden gem, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking.
