However, recognizing the need for a permanent solution, the government decided to construct a hospital here to treat infectious diseases. The location was ideal—secluded yet close enough to Sydney for efficient care.

The Coast Hospital, later known as Prince Henry Hospital, played a crucial role during significant health crises. During the bubonic plague outbreak in 1900, it served as a vital treatment center. Similarly, after World War I, when soldiers returned with the influenza virus, the hospital provided essential care. Today, the hospital site has transformed into a residential area, but its legacy lives on through nineteen heritage-listed buildings.

Two enduring landmarks from the hospital days still grace Little Bay:

Coast Cemetery: Situated south of the suburb, this cemetery holds the remains of over two thousand five hundred individuals. Most graves are now protected by vegetation within the Botany Bay National Park.

Interdenominational War Memorial Chapel: Overlooking the bay, this chapel was destroyed by fire in 1981 but was lovingly rebuilt the following year. Outside, memorial plaques honor former hospital staff.

Originally called Yarra Junction, the suburb faced mail mix-ups with Melbourne (Vic). Residents requested a name change, and it became Phillip Bay Heights. However, the community affectionately continued to refer to it as Little Bay, and eventually, that name stuck officially. Today, it evokes images of sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, and a rich historical tapestry.
