Located in the bustling heart of Greater Western Sydney, Sydney Olympic Park is a shining symbol of urban regeneration and a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Olympic spirit. This locale, positioned 13 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district, is affectionately referred to as Olympic Park, but its formal designation is Sydney Olympic Park.

The story of Sydney Olympic Park is as diverse as the multitude of events it accommodates. The region was formerly a segment of the Lidcombe suburb, known as “North Lidcombe”, but was christened “Homebush Bay” from 1989 to 2009. The monikers “Homebush Bay” and occasionally “Homebush” are still informally used to denote Stadium Australia and the entire Olympic Park precinct.

The transformation of Sydney Olympic Park began in earnest in 1991 with the formation of the Homebush Bay Development Corporation, which was charged with the remediation of the area’s pollution and the implementation of essential infrastructure. The development’s ambit was significantly broadened when Sydney was awarded the privilege of hosting the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. From 1995 onwards, the Olympic Coordination Authority supervised the planning, urban development, and management of the area and facilities for the Games.

The successful staging of the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the most extensive sporting events ever held in Australia, has had a significant impact on Sydney’s identity. Dubbed “the best Games ever”, it bolstered Sydney’s emerging status as an economic and cultural nexus, capable of orchestrating major international events. Australian athletes achieved remarkable success at the 2000 Games, shattering numerous Australian, Olympic, Paralympic, and World records.

Currently, Sydney Olympic Park serves as a refuge for locally rare ecosystems, species, artefacts, and buildings with heritage significance or green credentials, as well as expansive green space. This unique legacy of resources forms the core of the Park and contributes to its reputation as a lively precinct. The stadiums, arenas, and venues continue to host a variety of sporting, musical, and cultural events, including the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Sydney Festival, and a host of world-class sporting fixtures.

Significant transformations are on the horizon for Sydney Olympic Park. The Master Plan 2030 presents a comprehensive blueprint for the revitalisation of Sydney Olympic Park, encompassing a dynamic new town centre, educational facilities, shopping precinct, new residences, more employment opportunities, expanded open space, enhanced community facilities, and the provision of a new Metro station. Major transport infrastructure projects will bolster the evolution of the precinct and augment Sydney Olympic Park’s role as a leading destination for cultural, entertainment, recreational, and sporting events.

Visitors to Sydney Olympic Park can commence their journey at the Visitor Centre, where amiable staff animate this remarkable place, its past, and its future. The Park offers a plethora of activities, from exclusive tours of the Stadium to bike safaris along the Park’s 35km of cycle pathways. There are also numerous other thrilling attractions at Sydney Olympic Park, including playgrounds, trapeze, archery, bird spotting, traversing over 430 hectares of parklands, and family picnics.
