The local councillors approached the Member for Annandale, William Mahony, to secure funding for the construction of a post office in the municipality. The building was constructed between 1895 and 1896 under the supervision of the New South Wales Government Architect, Walter Liberty Vernon.

Architectural Marvel

The Annandale Post Office is a marvel of the Federation Free Classical style. Constructed of brick, Sydney sandstone, and timber, with a terracotta tile roof, the two-storey building comprises many fine details of the style. It features a single-storey colonnade or portico shelter consisting of large stone piers with square half-columns set at 45 degrees. Special moulded bricks are seen on the numerous arches as well as horizontal bands which continue the line of the stone window sills. The roof is one of the last with this architectural feature in Sydney as it features a number of gable ends on two separate elevations and raked eaves.

The Annandale Post Office has a rich history that is intertwined with the growth and development of the suburb. The post office was petitioned for as early as 1891, but it was not until 1894 when the construction was finally approved. Since its completion in 1896, it has been in continual operation as a post office.

Interestingly, the Annandale Post Office was most likely the original Petersham Post Office, which was renamed the Annandale Post Office in 1872. This adds another layer of historical significance to this landmark.
