Hero of Waterloo Hotel

The Hero of Waterloo Hotel, established in 1842, holds the distinction of possibly being Sydney’s longest trading hotel. Nestled in the historic area known as The Rocks, this hotel has borne witness to the transformation of Sydney from its early days to the bustling metropolis it is today.

The Rocks, a locality within Sydney, has a rich and diverse history. The Indigenous Gadigal people were the original inhabitants of the rocky headland and surrounding shoreline, having lived there for thousands of years. Their deep connection to the land is an integral part of the area’s history.

In 1788, the landscape of The Rocks began to change with the arrival of Australia’s first European settlers. These settlers, primarily British convicts and their overseers, established a community in and around the area. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of The Rocks.

The vibrant and colourful history of The Rocks is still very much alive today. It is etched in the architecture of the many surviving buildings from the last two centuries, each structure a testament to the area’s past. These buildings serve as a window into the past, offering a glimpse of the lives and stories of the people who once walked these streets.

At Photochronicles, we are committed to capturing and documenting the history of The Rocks. Through our lens, we aim to bring the past to life, photographing the many examples of times past and presenting them to you. Our goal is to chronicle the transition of the area from its historical roots to the present day, providing a visual journey through time.

Join us as we explore The Rocks, delving into its history, and uncovering the stories that make this area so unique. Together, we will discover the enduring legacy of The Rocks, and the role it has played in shaping Sydney into the city we know and love today.
